Can you use Germolene on dogs?

Last update:

If you visit us here at JollyMutt often, you know we have a lot of dogs. Running an informal dog rescue, with some notoriously “aggressive” dogs, and others that are infinitely curious, we often need first aid for our pups. There are some scuffles, but most of the time, it’s from playing in the yard and an occasional brush with a snake or other varmint. We do a lot of bandaging, which also requires a lot of first aid cream. We’ve used a lot of different creams and recently came across Germolene on advice from a friend. I’m always skeptical, though, so I did my research. Can you use Germolene on dogs?

The short answer is “yes,” but with caution.

The longer answer is, “Why would you”?

Read on, my friend…

Understanding Germolene

What is Germolene?

Germolene is a popular antiseptic cream for minor cuts, burns, and wounds. It contains two active ingredients – phenol and chlorhexidine digluconate – which work together to prevent infection and promote healing.

  • Phenol is a powerful antiseptic that kills bacteria and other harmful microorganisms that can cause infections.
  • Chlorhexidine digluconate is a broad-spectrum antiseptic effective against many bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Germolene is widely available in pharmacies and can be purchased without a prescription. However, it is important to use it only as directed and to seek medical advice if the wound is deep or infected.

Here’s the description, straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak:

Germolene Antiseptic Cream is used to ease pain and help prevent infections of minor cuts and grazes, minor burns, scalds, blisters, stings and insect bites, spots and chapped or rough skin.

The cream contains two active substances, phenol and chlorhexidine digluconate. Phenol and chlorhexidine digluconate have antiseptic properties for the disinfection of skin, wounds and burns. Phenol also has a local anaesthetic action for the relief of pain. The cream base helps to soften the skin and soothe irritation.

Description of Bayer Germolene Antiseptic Cream

How does Germolene work?

Germolene works by killing bacteria and other microorganisms that can cause infections.

Applying to a wound creates a protective barrier that prevents further contamination and promotes healing.

Phenol, one of the active ingredients in Germolene, works by denaturing the proteins in bacteria and other microorganisms. This disrupts their cellular function and ultimately kills them.

Chlorhexidine digluconate, the other active ingredient in Germolene, disrupts the cell membrane of bacteria and other microorganisms. This causes them to lose their structural integrity and ultimately die.

Quite the one-two punch!

Together, these two ingredients make Germolene an effective antiseptic cream that can help prevent infection and promote the healing of minor cuts, burns, and wounds.

So what’s the problem? Where’s the concern?

The main concern is the phenol, which is dangerous for dogs and should never be ingested.

And we know that our dogs will do everything possible to lick their wounds.

If you have more than one dog, the others will “help” with the wound licking.

It’s a wound-licking party!

All that licking is going to end up with sick dogs.

Remember the phenol? Very dangerous for dogs. You don’t feed your dog chocolate or macadamia nuts, and you don’t let them lick phenol.

Can You Use Germolene on Dogs?

My research shows that Germolene can be used on dogs under certain conditions.

  • Short-term use only
  • Use an Elizabethan collar (collar of shame!) to prevent licking or chewing
  • Ensure other pets don’t lick the area, either.

That’s it. Easy, right?

But I have to ask, with all of the completely dog-safe antiseptic creams on the market, why would you use one that is potentially harmful?

Why not opt for a completely safe approach?

You may think you’re safe because you have the collar of shame on nice and tight, but what if the pup lays down, the cream rubs into the floor/wall/carpet/etc., and then they lick it? Or another pet licks it?

You just don’t know, so why take the chance?

So – Can you use Germolene on dogs? Sure, you can. But should you? I have to say no to that.

Germolene on dogs – two thumbs down

Alternatives to Germolene for Dogs

Sudocrem as an alternative to Germolene for dogs

If you are looking for an alternative to Germolene for your dog, Sudocrem is a good option. Sudocrem is a medicated cream often used to treat nappy rash in babies. It contains zinc oxide, which has antiseptic properties and can help to soothe and protect the skin.

To use Sudocrem on your dog, apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected area. Be sure to rub it in well and prevent your dog from licking or chewing the area. Sudocrem is safe for dogs to ingest in small quantities, but it is best to avoid this if possible.

Chlorhexidine as an alternative to Germolene for dogs

Chlorhexidine (you’ll see it as “Hibiscrub”) is another alternative to Germolene that can be used on dogs. It is an antiseptic solution often used to clean wounds and prevent infection. Hibiscrub is universally used and recommended by veterinarians and is safe for dogs when diluted and used properly – see our article about using hibiscrub on dogs for more information.

To use Chlorhexidine on your dog, mix one-part Chlorhexidine with two parts water. Apply the solution to the affected area using a clean cloth or cotton ball. Be sure to avoid getting the solution in your dog’s eyes or mouth.

Savlon as an alternative to Germolene for dogs

Savlon is a popular antiseptic cream that can be used as an alternative to Germolene for dogs. It contains chlorhexidine gluconate, which has antiseptic properties and can help to prevent infection.

To use Savlon on your dog, apply a small amount of the cream to the affected area. Be sure to rub it in well and prevent your dog from licking or chewing the area. Savlon is safe for dogs to ingest in small quantities, but it is best to avoid this if possible.

How to Use Antiseptic Cream on Dogs

When using any antiseptic cream on your dog, following the instructions carefully is important.

In a general sense, the process is as follows:

  • First, clean the wound with warm water and mild soap.
  • Apply a small amount of antiseptic cream to the wound, covering the entire area.
  • Gently rub the cream into the skin, taking care not to cause any further irritation.
  • Cover the wound with a sterile dressing if necessary.
  • Depending on the severity of the wound and the dog’s temperament, an Elizabethan collar may be needed to prevent licking or chewing the affected area

If you have any concerns or questions about using antiseptic cream on your dog, don’t hesitate to consult with your veterinarian.

So, can you use Germolene on dogs?

Germolene contains dangerous ingredients for dogs, and plenty of dog-safe alternatives are at your fingertips.

My research shows that Germolene is technically safe for dogs but must be used carefully to ensure the dog (or other dogs, cats, lizards, or kids) doesn’t ingest it.

If you have some lying around and need it urgently, I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. But if you are stocking your puppy’s first-aid kit, I would not intentionally buy Germolene for that specific reason.
